The History Behind Our Festive Blooms

Did you know the flowers we cherish at Christmas have roots stretching back centuries?

The tradition of bringing evergreens indoors dates back to ancient times, long before Christianity. Cultures like the Romans and Pagans used holly, ivy, and mistletoe to symbolise eternal life and the promise of spring during the dark winter solstice. The iconic wreath, which we proudly craft, evolved from these ancient traditions, initially exchanged as tokens of goodwill during Roman New Year festivals.

Perhaps the most famous Christmas flower, the Poinsettia, was actually cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico long ago. They called it Cuetlaxochitl and used it for dye and medicine. It became associated with Christmas in the 17th century when Franciscan monks incorporated its natural bloom into their nativity celebrations, giving rise to the Mexican folk tale of Pepita, who offered humble weeds to the Christ Child, which miraculously turned into the brilliant red 'Flowers of the Holy Night.'

Cornwall’s Christmas, or Nadelik, is rich with unique traditions that offer a wonderful alternative to the mainstream.

• Guise Dancing: In West Cornwall, particularly around the Twelve Days of Christmas, people still partake in this age-old tradition! Guise dancers wear costumes and masks and roam the streets performing music and dances in exchange for food and money.

• Tom Bawcock's Eve: Celebrated on 23rd December in the fishing village of Mousehole, this commemorates a heroic fisherman who saved the village from starvation. The event is marked by a procession and the serving of Stargazy Pie, a dish where the fish heads poke through the crust, seemingly 'gazing' at the stars!

• The Revival of Carols: Many of the carols we sing today were lost following the Puritan ban on Christmas in the 1640s. Penzance-born MP Davies Gilbert helped preserve and revive them in 1822 by compiling a collection of ancient carols, ensuring their survival for generations to come.
